WE COULD SOON BE USING WEARABLE BATTERIES TO POWER OUR DEVICES

One thing is for certain, batteries and battery powered technology is evolving rapidly.  This story brings the idea of wearable batteries a few steps closer.  “Nicholas Kotov at the University of Michigan and his colleagues have developed a conducting component for a lithium-ion battery that maintains its electrical conductivity even when stretched to a strain of more than 300 per cent” according to this article in New Scientist.

US DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT PROVIDES FREE TRAINING ON SAFE TRANSPORTATION OF LITHIUM BATTERIES

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and U.S. EPA invite waste management industry members that handle lithium batteries (battery and electronics refurbishers and recyclers, household hazardous and solid waste programs) and other related businesses, such as certification program auditors, to participate in free three-hour workshops.  Be great to see something similar offered by Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development here in Australia!

COMING SOON: CATHODE-TO-CATHODE RECYCLING

Canadian recycler American Manganese Inc. has achieved a 99.88% purity level in the production of cathode material using its patented RecycLiCo process.  This is another great example of a circular economy for batteries coming a step closer.  Here in Australia, Lithium Australia and their subsidiary VSPS are leaders in the field.

AUSTRALIA URGED TO INVEST IN RECYCLING MANUFACTURING AFTER INDONESIA SENDS RUBBISH BACK

Jakarta recently announced that it would be returning 210 tonnes of Australian household rubbish.  This story highlights the importance of securing markets for recyclable products onshore in Australia.  Even more important when we are talking with batteries where export is increasingly challenging either due to shipping concerns, difficulty of securing insurance, and countries such as Indonesia no longer wanting to be Australia’s dumping ground.

STATES WILL BE REQUIRED TO SPEND AGREED PORTION OF PROCUREMENT BUDGET ON RECYCLED MATERIALS FOR PUBLIC PROJECTS

The federal government is preparing to unveil “ambitious” new targets that will require all states and territories to spend a portion of their procurement budgets on recycled materials for public projects.  This is an essential part of any stewardship scheme and is a welcomed development in federal policy.  We will be watching keenly to see how it works and the impact it has on government purchasing choices.

LITHIUM AUSTRALIA TO MARKET LFP, THE SAFE LITHIUM-ION BATTERY

Lithium Australia NL (ASX: LIT) is forming a business partnership with leading Chinese battery producer DLG Battery Co. Ltd (‘DLG’) to launch a new range of lithium-ion batteries (‘LIBs’) in the Australian market, with a focus on industry-scale energy storage systems (‘ESS’).
