AUSTRALIAN BATTERY INDUSTRY REFLECTS ON THE IMPACT OF COVID19 |

Over the past few weeks ABRI has interviewed members to understand the Implications of COVID-19 on the Battery Industry. The results were summarised and presented to Trevor Evans, Assistant Minister for Waste and Environmental Management. The findings show that even in the context of battery recycling as an essential service, COVID19 is presenting some significant challenges to the industry.

EUROPEAN STUDY PUTS THE SPOTLIGHT ON THE IMPACT OF FIRES CAUSED BY BATTERIES IN E-WASTE RECYCLING |

The aim of the study was to better understand the issue of fires in the used electronic and electrical equipment management chain, to better characterise fires associated with e-waste containing batteries, and assess the severity of the issue. The report provides valuable insights into the frequency and severity of fires as well as the cost impacts such fires are having on the industry.

As Chinese automakers awaken from their COVID slumber, battery demand is expected to rise. Fundamentals for reinvigoration of the supply chain look bright, particularly for lithium ferro phosphate (‘LFP’) batteries, which have found their niche in low-cost electric cars, buses, trucks and rail and in energy-storage applications, not to mention as a replacement for lead-acid batteries in various other forms of transport and communication.

ABRI SEEKS SPONSORS FOR TRAINING AND GUIDELINES |

ABRI is seeking to create new revenue streams to manage the impact on our cash flow as a result of COVID-19. Please let us know if you would like to support our work and ensure that guidelines and training can continue to be created to improve knowledge of battery best practices and safety. ABRI’s guidelines are widely distributed and accessed from the ABRI website and sponsors will be recognised accordingly. Please respond to our EOI by COB Friday 29th May 2020. In particular we are seeking sponsors for:
- Packaging guidelines for transporting used handheld batteries of mixed chemistries (draft attached)
- Packaging guidelines for transporting used lead acid batteries (previous version attached)
- Packaging guidelines for transporting used lithium batteries
- Development of a training program to support each of the above guidelines to enhance compliance, foster best practice, and assist members to educate clients regarding transport packing requirements.

US MONTHLY SCRAP EXPORTS DOWN ON 2019 |

Latest trade data released by the US Commerce Department shows total US scrap exports in March were close to three million tonnes in March, which was up on the month before but down 8.8% on March 2019.
But the quarterly figures, pulled together by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, show that exports in Q1 2020 were just under nine million tonnes, slightly up on the same quarter in 2019.
