ABRI RELEASES UPDATED USED LEAD ACID BATTERY (ULAB) GUIDELINES |

The ABRI guidelines for packing and safe transport of used lead acid batteries are now available for download from the ABRI website. The Guidance have been revised to address recent changes to The Australian Dangerous Goods Code. Thank you to members who assisted in the review and provided invaluable input.

22 October: In a Joint Media release, Minister Sussan Ley and Assistant Minister Trevor Evans announce the Morrison Government is investing $1 million in the establishment of a new Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence that will play a key role in driving Australia’s circular economy towards an eighty per cent recovery rate across all waste streams by 2030.
As part of its unprecedented campaign to reduce pressure on the environment and create jobs by placing waste and recycling on the national agenda, the Morrison Government will bring together research and industry groups to foster innovation.

FINAL PLACES FOR ABRI WEBINAR: IMPLEMENTING NEW PACKING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ROAD TRANSPORT OF MIXED LOADS OF BATTERIES: ADG 7.7 |

ABRI has held two of the four webinars on ‘Implementing new packing instructions for transporting mixed loads of batteries: Australian Dangerous Goods Code 7.7‘. The next webinars are scheduled for Thursday 5 November and Monday 9 November.
Places are filling fast with only a couple of places available for 5 November and a few more available on 9 November.
The webinar will provide practical guidance on safe packing of mixed loads of batteries for road transport and is presented by ABRI’s Libby Chaplin and Debra Kirk from the National Transport Commission.
This webinar has been prepared by ABRI with input from the National Transport Commission and members of the Competent Authorities Panel to ensure that the information provided is consistent with the latest version of the ADG. The Australian Dangerous Goods Code was updated to version 7.7 in July 2020 for implementation October 2020 with a 12-month transition period to follow.
The webinar will cover road transport compliance and best practice guidance including topics such as:
- General safety
- Choosing a qualified recycler
- Acceptable containers
- Packing instructions
- Placarding
- Transport and waste approval documentation
- Managed damaged and defective batteries
- This to avoid
Who should attend?

GO AHEAD FOR AUSTRALIA’S FIRST LITHIUM-ION BATTERY MANUFACTURING FACILITY |

Lithium-ion battery manufacturer, Energy Renaissance, has announced the build of Renaissance One, a new $28 million battery manufacturing facility in Tomago, in the Hunter Region.
Mark Chilcote, Managing Director of Energy Renaissance, said, “We have settled on Tomago as the site of our first plant, construction will commence and the plant is scheduled for completion in 2021.”

FOCUSING ON PRECURSORS FOR LITHIUM-ION BATTERY PRODUCTION |

28 October: Lithium Australia NL (ASX: LIT, ‘the Company’) has announced the grant of a US patent covering its SiLeach® process, designed to recover lithium from micas as lithium phosphate. The significance of that is simple – lithium phosphate is the ideal precursor for the manufacture of lithium ferro phosphate (‘LFP’), the fastest growing sector of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) industry.

The Future Battery Forum is going hybrid this year on December 10-11, 2020 in Berlin. Virtual ticket registration is open.
The management conference brings together the entire value system of battery technologies: around 500 users, battery system & cell manufacturers and their suppliers will spend two days exchanging information at this virtual event, making new contacts and discussing how the industrial ramp-up with a high market share of battery-driven solutions in Europe can be achieved.
