4. ACCC GUIDANCE ON THE APPLICATION OF MANDATORY STANDARDS FOR BUTTON BATTERY SAFETY

The ACCC has developed A Guide for Business on the Application of Mandatory StandardsThe purpose of this guide is to assist suppliers in understanding the requirements for secure battery compartments, child resistant packaging, and warnings and information.

The ACCC has also developed a fact sheet which summarises the requirements of the new standards for the benefit of suppliers.

The ACCC is encouraging suppliers to comply with the new requirements as soon as possible, given the risk of harm associated with button/coin batteries and consumer goods containing button/coin batteries is fully understood and documented. The ACCC is encouraging businesses to ensure buying arrangements they are entering into now position them to have only compliant stock available for supply in the future. Selling any non-compliant stock on or after 22 June 2022 may result in penalties being applied.

The Product Safety Australia website also provides background on the ACCC’s safety investigation into button batteries, as well as other information on button battery safety.
