REVISION OF AS 5377 MANAGEMENT OF EEE FOR RE-USE OR RECYCLING NOW OPEN FOR COMMENT

The draft standard AS 5377 – ‘Management of electrical and electronic equipment for re-use or recycling’ is now open for public comment.  The revision is significant and addresses end-of-life management of batteries to a larger degree.

Should you wish to comment on this draft, you will need to create an account which you will be prompted to do when downloading the draft from the Standards Australia website, which can be accessed via the button below.  Please note when commenting, it is suggested not to make any unnecessary changes to the template other than the addition of the comments and population of the relevant columns as the upload tool is very particular and will return with errors if there are any inconsistencies.

There is a legend on the template as well as some helpful information and organisations can choose to submit all their comments together, or members can submit them individually. There is also a link to a ‘Public Commenting Guide’ on the site which can also assist when commenting.

ACCC BUTTON BATTERY SURVEY

ACCC SURVEY - BUTTON BATTERY SAFETY

The ACCC has issued a consultation paper outlining regulatory options to address button battery safety. Stakeholder feedback has indicated that the proposed regulatory options would result in significant costs for industry.  In response to stakeholder feedback, the ACCC has modified certain proposed requirements.

The ACCC is seeking information from industry stakeholders on the costs associated with implementing a revised set of requirements to address button battery safety.

There are two surveys:
(1) For suppliers of products that use/contain button or coin cell batteries: Button battery safety – Cost for suppliers of products that use/contain button or coin cell batteries

(2) For suppliers of button or coin cell batteries (sold separately): Button battery safety – Costs for suppliers of button or coin cell batteries (sold separately)

Please complete the survey relevant to your business (or both surveys where applicable).

The information received in response to these surveys will be used to evaluate the costs and benefits of proposed mandatory regulation to address button battery safety.

The surveys close for responses on Sunday 6 September 2020.

$10 MILLION GRANTS FOR NSW SOLAR PANEL AND BATTERY STORAGE

The NSW Government is investing $10 million to help improve environmental performance by diverting end-of-life solar panel systems from landfill, with the first round of grants now open.

Although current waste volumes are relatively low, this emerging waste stream is expected to rapidly increase over the next decade as installed systems reach their end-of-life.
