Work recommences on a national battery stewardship scheme

The Battery Implementation Working Group (BIWG) met in Melbourne on 9 October to recommence work on a national battery stewardship scheme for handheld batteries.
When Environment Ministers met in July they requested that work on an industry driven stewardship approach be refined to focus on hazardous and rechargeable battery types, such as button cell, power tool, sealed lead acid and emergency lighting batteries. This work will continue to be led by the Queensland Government.
Planning for the national scheme will be informed by several pilot recycling projects, including ABRI’s Power Tools Batteryback project and Lighting Council Australia’s EXITcycle project for emergency and exit lighting batteries.
BIWG will oversee planning for the stewardship scheme with input from a Technical Working Group.
